Selling Against X Terminal Vendors
==================================
In 1992 HP was ranked as the worldwide leading supplier of color X
terminals by industry consultants for the third consecutive year.
According to the International Data Corporation and X Business Group,
HP captured 29% of the color X station market in 1992. HP's dominance
of the X station market continues in 1993 with the current industry-
leading family of RISC-based X stations.
HP has been successfully selling against a number of different types
of competitors. Our competitors include system vendors, PC vendors,
and X station vendors We have been able to develop successful selling
strategies against each of our competitors.
Let's first discuss how to successfully sell against X terminal
vendors. Relative to other X terminal vendors, the HP 700/RX offers
industry-leading functionality and performance.
LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONALITY
------------------------
New Software Release
--------------------
HP has made some dramatic improvements to the X server
software (revision B.04) that now supports a broad range of local
clients and provides industry-leading ease-of-use and flexibility. The
features that are discussed in the following section are unique to the
HP X station and should be used in positioning our product relative to
other X terminals.
HP VUE/RX: Local User Environment
---------------------------------
These local clients include HP Visual User Environment/RX (HP VUE/RX),
which is the only local user environment available today. HP VUE/RX
allows users to manage multiple windows and create multiple workspaces
easily within the X station environment while providing the familiar
look and feel of HP VUE 3.0, the newest version of HP's standard
graphical user interface.
HP VUE/RX shields users from the intricacies of the UNIX-based
operating system through the use of self-explanatory icons, pull-down
menus and slide-up bars. It also provides a workspace control panel
that permits switching among workspaces, a toolbox icon for launching
frequently used applications and tools, and a local client launcher
for other local clients.
HP VUE/RX lets users manage and navigate through multiple workspaces
with the push of a button. It's like having several X stations on your
desk at once. Multiple workspaces allow users to logically group
applications and to unclutter busy displays into more readable working
areas. This is especially useful for smaller, less expensive displays,
like our 14 or 16 inch models. It is simple for an administrator to
relabel the buttons to names that are meaningful to a user. Similarly,
the administrator can define anywhere from one up to six workspaces.
In addition to multiple workspaces, HP VUE/RX gives users a control
panel for fast access to personal productivity and system utilities.
This control panel includes a clock, mail icon, tool box icon (for
easy launching of frequently used applications), local client launcher
(for launching of other local clients such as xterm and hpterm),
workspace switcher (allows switching between work spaces) and a lock
icon. The control panel uses slide-ups, which allow users to easily
extend and customize their client solution.
The control panel on VUE/RX looks like a control panel that you would
see if you were running HP VUE on a host, but it's running on the
X station without HP VUE on the host. And since it is running locally,
users can get the key features of HP VUE in a multivendor environment.
This sort of desktop environment lets your customers focus on the job,
rather than differences between computer systems. No other X station
offers this desktop manager capability as a local client.
Benefits of Local Clients
-------------------------
There are a couple of reasons why customers are interested in local
clients. The most common reason given for wanting a local client is
to reduce LAN traffic. Another important reason is to off-load some
MIPS or memory load from a system host computer. This can be important
if a few more users need to be added to a heavily loaded host, or if
they have an older host with memory constraints.
A unique characteristic of HP's local clients is that when the local
client is terminated, the X station memory that is used is recovered.
This allows users and administrators greater flexibility through the
optimized use of X station memory.
Furthermore, by offloading the host of user environment and window
management functions, the host is freed up to do what it was intended
to do - run applications. This allows customers a streamlined form of
client/server computing where the client and server resource usage is
optimized.
Frontend HP VUE
---------------
For those who want to use VUE/RX as a local client, but also want the
added functionality of HP VUE 3.0 (like the Help Manager and File
Manager), there is another local client called Frontend HP VUE.
Frontend HP VUE is a local user environment that off-loads host RAM
and MIPS and provides system administrators with the flexibility to
configure systems for their particular needs. The HP VUE window
manager can run on the HP 700/RX and work with the balance of
HP VUE 3.0 on a host. Frontend HP VUE also provides drag-and-drop
icons for ease of use and a workspace control panel for greater
flexibility.
Other Local Clients
-------------------
Everyone may not choose to use HP VUE/RX as a local user environment.
In that case, local window managers are available that suit different
users' needs. This includes a standard MOTIF Window Manager (mwm) and
a very compact window manager called twm. The local client we offer
for mwm is a fully licenced and compliant implementation, so users can
be sure that it will work as expected with your applications. This is
the most commonly requested window manager. For customers who don't
need the full featured nature of mwm, we've included a version of twm
on our server tape that can be used as a local window manager. This is
the implementation of twm that is supplied by MIT on their
distribution of X11R5. The advantage of twm is that it is a very
compact window manager that only consumes about 400K of RAM in the
X station.
The local terminal emulators that are provided are xterm and hpterm.
These emulators will run over the local area network, or they could be
directed through the serial interface that is standard with the
HP 700/RX.
X11R5 Support
-------------
This server software release will upgrade the X station with the most
recent MIT release of X. The R5 server software we have will be fully
compatible with any X11R4 compliant applications that are currently
used.
Font Server:
The most significant feature of X11R5 is the scalable font support.
With X11R4, customers had to have all of the font types and sizes on
the host system, which could consume a lot of disk space. With R5
based applications, specific hosts on the network can be designated as
font servers. When a client needs a specific font, it can access the
font server which will generate the appropriate font with correct
scaling for the application.
Time-out Extension:
We've added an interesting HP extension to our X11R5 server software.
The Time-out Extension adds a capability that's important to some of
our customers concerned about data security. This extension ties into
the screen saver of the HP 700/RX, so that when the screen saver
activates, an X-event is generated and sent to the host. A customer
can use this X-event to trigger a client program like X11lock or even
automatic log-off.
HP SharedX
----------
HP SharedX is a product that allows X windows users to share display
information to facilitate better communication. It allows one or more
X windows from a "sender" to be shared with one or more other
displays in real time. Text and graphics can be shared along with a
telepointer. Users can move the pointer to draw attention to areas on
the display as well as edit text on-the-fly. This is a superb tool
when collaborative work is done between remote locations.
The HP 700/RX is the only X station that can be used to initiate or be
the "sender" of a shared X session. With this release of the server
software, the HP SharedX extension is included as an optionally
downloadable extension. Combine the HP 700/RX with a host with
HP SharedX, and you get the benefits of this productivity tool in
product development, training workshops or customer support
applications.

Selling Into System Environments
================================
In the workstation market, a certain set of customers require the
industry-leading performance offered by the Series 700/800 to run
compute-intensive applications. These customers are characterized as
power users.
Another set of customers are attracted to the performance offered by
the Series 700/800 but require a much lower cost-per-seat solution.
These customers are characterized as price-sensitive users.
The emphasis of this section is to address the needs of price-
sensitive users by describing low cost-per-seat solutions. When used
in appropriate sales situations, these solutions can help you to
compete effectively against systems offered by Sun, DEC and IBM.
Although, this document makes specific references to Sun, many of the
suggested strategies are applicable against system vendors such as
DEC and IBM.
Competitive Situation
---------------------
There are two major considerations to take into account when facing
Sun as a competitor. The first case is when the customer is primarily
concerned with performance of the given application. In this situation
the Series 700/800 workstations clearly out-perform Sun's products.
The other case which needs to be considered is when the customer's
primary consideration is low cost-per-seat. The HP 700/RX stations
can play a very significant role in beating Sun in cost-per-seat sales
situations.
The following material will help present a case for the HP 9000
Model 715/33 and HP 700/RX stations compared to Sun's products.
When customers evaluate the cost-per-seat of a system solution there
are three key factors to consider:
- Initial hardware purchase price
- Ongoing hardware maintenance costs
- System administration costs
Initial Hardware Purchase Price
-------------------------------
The HP 700/RX stations can help you beat competitors in entry-level system
pricing. Starting with Two-Seater system solutions, the Model 715/33
and the HP 700/RX combination offers superior performance and winning
price points.
With Promotion 2,706, HP offers four easy-to-order workgroup solutions
starting at a cost-per-seat of just $3,945 per seat. These fully
configured bundles include everything your customers need for a working
solution: one Model 715 workstation and two HP 700/RX stations
with sufficient memory and disk space. These workgroups are
available in 15", 17", 19" color and 19" grayscale configurations.
System List Special Product # Cost/seat
Price Price
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
15" color $17,930 $11,834 A2870A $3,945
17" color $22,080 $14,573 A2872A $4,858
19" grayscale $27,080 $17,873 A2871A $5,958
19" color $32,780 $21,635 A2873A $7,212
These systems include one HP 9000 Model 715 workstation with 32 MB RAM
and up to 1 GB disk, CD-ROM, HP-UX 9.0 and 2 HP X stations with
10 MB of RAM. There is no limit on quantities. This offer ends on
June 30, 1993.
This rationale can also be applied to environments where 3D graphics
applications are used. With the introduction of PowerShade 2.0, you
can offer customers the lowest cost per seat 3D graphics workgroups.
Adding X Stations to Lower Costs
--------------------------------
The cost-per-seat can be reduced even further by adding more HP 700/RX
stations to the Model 715/33. Please note that these are entry-level
configurations that can be discussed with customers. As application
needs are understood, actual system configurations can be priced based
upon the customer's price and performance needs.
The following table illustrates the U.S. list cost-per-seat of systems
that are configured using one Model 715/33 as the host system for
1 to 5 HP 700/RX stations.

System Administration Costs
---------------------------
The system administration cost savings associated with using HP 700/RX
stations versus workstations are not easily quantifiable. The savings
are realized by reducing the amount of time required to administer the
network or system.
The system administration time savings are achieved in several areas.
As new software is deployed, the system administrator does not need to
update all individual workstations. Instead, with HP 700/RX
configurations, only the host workstations need to be updated.
Similarly, as software upgrades become available, only the host
workstations need to be upgraded. The time savings due to this are
considerable. Also, as system backups are required there are fewer
host systems to backup when working with a network of HP 700/RX
stations. When networks of workstations are deployed, there is
tendency for users to customize their workstation environment. This
makes life more difficult for a system administrator. In an X station
environment, there is an opportunity for the system administrator to
impose a more disciplined structure to the user's environment.
All of these result in reduced time required to administer a network.
In effect, fewer system administrators can now administer the same
number of users. When considering the loaded cost of a system
administrator, the cost savings offered by using X stations can be
significant. According to customer feedback, one system administrator
can manage two to ten times the number of X station users as opposed
to workstation users.
Selling Into PC Environments
============================
HP has recently introduced X server software for PCs which allows
customers to seamlessly integrate HP X stations into PC environments.
The X server software, which is available for PCs running SCO ODT
(Santa Cruz Operation, Open Desktop), will give customers easy
installation and administration of X stations from PC hosts.
PC-specific installation and administration scripts shield the PC
administrator from the complexity of UNIX. The October 1992 issue of
SCO Magazine gives positive reviews on our X server software.
PCs were originally developed to enhance individual or personal
productivity with stand-alone computer systems. The development of
X stations was based on the concept of a network of users, recognizing
that people need to access information from various locations, share
the information quickly and easily, and call upon computing
performances as needed. In addition, X stations provide users with
access to several applications running simultaneously in multiple
windows. This multitasking capability enables users to work more
naturally, moving from one task to another quickly, easily, and
therefore more effectively.
Many PC applications (for example Lotus 1-2-3, Wordperfect and
CorelDRAW) have been ported to UNIX to maximize performance and
usability. PC users that have dedicated a lot of time and effort to
learning their PC applications and want to preserve that investment
can comfortably migrate to the UNIX platform. Also, PC emulators (like
SoftPC) can ease the transition from a single-user, single tasking DOS
environment to the multi-user, multi-tasking world of UNIX.
If your customer is considering running X Windows on a PC, they will
find the cost of upgrading the PC to run X Windows is roughly
equivalent to buying an X station. After considering the costs of
items such as networking hardware, networking software, X Window
server software, graphics cards, high resolution monitors, etc., the
difference between PC-based X Windows and X stations is comparable.
However, the X station can provide 25-40% more X Window performance
than a PC. This is of particular interest to customers that will spend
a substantial portion of their time running X Windows.
Data security and integrity may be an issue for your customers due to
threats of data theft, data corruption and viruses. PCs, because of
their local storage devices, are susceptible to these threats. On the
other hand, X stations, due to their centralized operation, insure
better secutiry. In an X station environment, storage devices are
centralized and therefore under the tight control of a systems
administrator.
With an operating system on the desktop of every PC user, it becomes
time consuming and expensive to keep the software on these desktops
current. Furthermore, the task of tracking and administering
individual licences can become cumbersome. These issues can be avoided
in an X station environment where software administration can be
performed on a centralized storage device.
3D Graphics Support
===================
With the introduction PowerShade 2.0 and HP-UX 9.0, capabilities such
as Virtual memory to X (VMX) and support for transmitting data over
Ethernet, the HP 700/RX family of X stations can now interactively
display 3D graphics applications.
VMX performance with HP 700/RX stations is very good due to the
outstanding networking code of the HP 700/RX. Performance using
PowerShade 2.0 with HP X stations is as much as 40% faster than
competitive X terminals when receiving images.
Support for PowerShade 2.0 on HP X stations provides customers with
a low-cost per seat for 3D applications that require entry-level
workstation performance for non design-intensive tasks.
How VMX Works
-------------
PowerShade is a graphics library which accepts calls from application
software (ie. CAD, 3D visualization) and renders the output onto the
display of a standard 2D graphics workstation. These graphics calls
may be in the format of either HP's Starbase API or the industry-standard
Phigs API. Later this year it is expected that Pexlib will also be supported.
PowerShade 2.0 has add the VMX capability in
which the graphics rendering is output to a portion of the host system
(HP 9000) memory. It is then converted to the X Window System protocol
and transmitted over the network to an HP 700/RX station. To help
reduce network traffic, VMX incorporates a bounding box algorithm
which only sends portions of the viewed image that have changed since
the last view down the network.
VMX compared to PEX
-------------------
Another emerging means of providing 3D graphics display over the
network is via the PEX protocol extensions to X. The PEX protocol
requires the use of PEX servers to render the image at each desktop,
whereas with VMX, rendering is executed on the host system allowing
the use of standard X stations at each desktop.
Since 3D graphics image rendering (at useful speeds) requires
considerable compute power both in terms of integer and floating point,
a useful PEX server needs to be as powerful as today's workstations
and is not practical on today's X stations.
Where VMX is Applicable
-----------------------
The VMX extension to PowerShade 2.0 is limited in performance by the
speed of today's Ethernet networks as shown in the table below.
Applications that exceed these limits will cause a degradation in use
response times. Please note that the larger number shown below applies
when a small portion of the images changes for each update. The
smaller numbers apply when the entire image changes for each update.
Actual update rates will be limited by the rendering speed of
PowerShade itself. As shown below, the performance of running
PowerShade 1.0 standalone on an HP Apollo 9000 Model 720 is almost the
same on an HP 700/RX station using PowerShade 2.0 (using the Model 720
as the host for the X station).
Please note that any existing applications that support Starbase,Phigs
and/or Pexlib (future) should operate with an HP 700/RX.
License Requirements
--------------------
Customers that need to run PowerShade 2.0 on an HP 700/RX station
with need to purchase a separate single-user license for each station.
The P/N for the license will be on the November 15 CPL. The U.S. list
price for the single-user PowerShade license for HP 700/RX stations is
$500. Please refer to the November 15 issue of Computer News for the
ordering information.

Questions and Answers

Features
--------
QUESTION:
Why don't you support the PEX extension in this revision of the server
software, since this was a part of the X11R5 release from MIT?
ANSWER:
The division evaluated the PEX extensions, the impact of the
extensions on the HP 700/RX and competitive X stations that use these
extensions. It's our opinion that much more is needed in an X station
than an RISC processor and a floating point chip to get reasonable 3D
performance. This is confirmed by the weak acceptance seen by the
PEXstations offered by Tek and NCD. The best alternative that we see
today is for a customer to use a work- station for good 3D performance.
In November with the release of HP-UX 9.0 some additional options will
become available with Powershade 2.0 for X stations using Starbase and
PHIGS applications. (Refer to 3D graphics support section.)
QUESTION:
Can a customer program the Flash ROM card to change the fonts normally
supplied by HP?
ANSWER:
This will be possible when programming services are offered in the
next release of the HP server software. If a very high volume of units
are needed the division can consider making special versions of the
Flash ROM card with specific fonts for a customer. Additional charges
would be required.
QUESTION:
What is the difference between a 4 MB Flash ROM card and a 10 MB Flash
ROM card?
ANSWER:
The 10 MB Flash ROM is intended for Japanese customers since it
contains Japanese fonts. This Flash ROM card is also intended for
English speaking customers who wish to use HP VUE/RX stored on the
card. The 4 MB Flash ROM card does not contain HP VUE/RX or Japanese
fonts because of a space limitations. The 4 MB Flash ROM card contains
the X server, standard fonts, downloadable extensions, and local
clients such as mwm, xterm, and hpterm.
QUESTION:
Do you have any plans to provide XIE (X Imaging Extensions)?
ANSWER:
As soon as XIE becomes a standard, HP will consider the addition of
this extension to the server. HP has developed dynamically
downloadable extensions allowing our server architecture to be modular
and extendable. Due to the modular architecture of the server, adding
new server extensions like XIE will be relatively easy.
Configuration
-------------
QUESTION:
How much DRAM memory should my customer purchase to be able to run a
given X application?
ANSWER:
Mem. config. Typical user's environment
------------ --------------------------
4 MB The standard amount of DRAM on all HP 700/RX models.
Sufficient amount to run HP VUE and an X application
with backing store disabled (examples: Wingz, Oassis).
Not recommended for running local clients or using
backing store.
6 MB The recommended amount of DRAM for color models.
Sufficient amount to run HP VUE and a medium to heavy
X application (examples:Framemaker, Unigraphics, ME10)
with backing store enabled in By Application mode.
Local clients are only applicable if you plan to run
twm with several terminal emulators.
10 MB The recommended amount of DRAM to run multiple X
applications on top of HP VUE with backing store
enabled in By Application mode. The recommended
amount of DRAM for using a local window manager
and multiple copies of local terminal emulators. If
you need Japanese fonts then 10 MB is recommended.
18 MB The recommended amount of DRAM when running multiple
X applications on top of HP VUE with backing stored
enabled in Auto when Mapped mode. This configuration
is also recommended for users who intend to store a
multiple, high-resolution pixmaps. If using the local
user environment (VUE/RX) and there are many (20+)
terminal emulators in the multiple workspaces, it is
recommended that 18 MB be used. This may occur in the
CASE market.
Important points to remember: Customers have a choice of 2, 4, and
8 MB SIMMs (DRAM modules). Either one or two SIMM modules can be
installed. If two SIMM modules are installed they must be the same
size.
QUESTION:
Do customers have to purchase additional memory from HP?
ANSWER:
The SIMMs supplied for the HP 700/RX stations are extensively tested
and meet HP's high quality standards. While customers may choose to
purchase third party memory, HP cannot be responsible for the
operation of the X station if another vendor's memory is used in the
product.
QUESTION:
What monitors can be used with the HP 700/RX family of X stations?
ANSWER:
The list of supported monitors for each base unit model is listed on
page 29. Any other monitor, flat panel display, or screen projector
that supports the RS-343 video standard and matches the selected
resolution and refresh rate of the supported HP monitor will probably
work fine with the HP 700/RX base units.
Competition
-----------
QUESTION:
Are software licences required for the HP 700/RX server software?
ANSWER:
Only one licence for the HP 700/RX server software is required per
site. This is a definite advantage for HP over many competitors who
charge per-user licence fees. The fees are not as much of an issue as
the need for the customer to then track licenses and ensure all users
have them.
QUESTION:
How can we counter the topic of footprint which is often brought up
by our competition?
ANSWER:
The HP 700/RX base unit has been designed to be used in vertical and
horizontal orientations. This minimizes desk space and effectively
counters the competition.
Support
-------
QUESTION:
What does the supported host and environment mean?
ANSWER:
The supported host and environment means the following:
- HP will distribute X server software in a variety of media formats
that are most typical for HP, Sun, IBM and PC hosts.
- The installation script is tailored for a given host and checks for
any software/system dependencies before automatically installing the
files.
- All utilities and tools are customized and/or compiled for the
supported host and installed automatically. HP will supply utilities
for the supported non-HP host, if required. The HP 700/RX
administration script is tailored for each host supported.
- The HP 700/RX station will automatically start up with the standard
environment for a given host (for example : OpenWindows GUI on Sun
SPARCstation).
- HP Application Software Support Services are available for non-HP
hosts. The customers who purchased support services can phone HP
on-line support with questions. If the problem can't be solved
remotely the HP Response Center may mobilize the local and the
factory resources to resolve the problem quickly.
QUESTION:
What is required for an unsupported Unix computer to work
with the HP 700/RX station?
ANSWER:
The following are prerequisites on both the X station and the host:
HP 700/RX ROM server Card (C2725B or C2726B) or downloadable
X server code, fonts, and color palette from the
supported computer.
Unix host Ethernet network support (LAN connectivity)
(necessary) TCP/IP and UDP (standard network services)
X Window System software (X libraries and applications)
Sufficient amount of host resources to support the
required number of X stations (compute power, RAM, and
disk space).
Unix host TFTP or/and NFS support (file transfer mechanism)
(recommended) XDM or TELNET support (login mechanism)
QUESTION:
Can local clients be used with an unsupported Unix computer?
ANSWER:
Local clients require what we call a peer program running on the
host. For the supported hosts we supply the peers and they gets
installed on the host as a part of the installation process. With a
non-supported host a customer would have to use the source files for
the peers, compile them for the host and install them in order to
operate correctly with the HP 700/RX. The local clients can also
operate without peer programs, however then they have no access to
Unix system facilities like file I/O, environmental variables, time,
date, etc.
QUESTION:
What PS/2 trackball is supported on the HP 700/RX?
ANSWER:
The only trackball available from HP is the M1309A HP-HIL unit. Some
vendors offer PS/2 trackballs. To use a third party trackball your
customer should look for one that is PS/2 compatible and complies with
the Logitech PIX mouse protocol.
QUESTION:
Do you support the XRemote serial protocol?
ANSWER:
No. XRemote is a proprietary protocol offered and promoted by NCD.
NCD stresses the speed of XRemote in sales situations. Some customers
have been lead to believe that XRemote is an accepted standard. It is
not a standard and has not been accepted by the X Consortium for X11.
At HP we believe in adopting standars and support Serial Line Interned
Protocol (SLIP). By using SLIP or Compressed SLIP (CSLIP) with the
HP 700/RX and compressing modems (V.32 or V.42) you can achieve good
remote performance. In addition, SLIP and CSLIP networking will allow
you to attach a remote printer to the HP 700/RX something NCD can't do
with XRemote.
